Hirose Tansou was aconfucian scholar who opened a school and taugha confucianism from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period
Many of the graduates of his school went on to leading roles during the Meiji Restoration such as Omura Masuziro and Takano Choei
His younger brother ran a business which became an official provisioner of goods and banking needs to the feudal clan in Oita by edict of the Shogunate
He became the princiapal merchant in this part Kyushu the museum contains artifacts pertaining to the daily lives of people from that era
