Squash Tips Part 2
Avoiding dangerousness - Let and Stroke
Squash is played by two players in a court hitting the ball each other.
Hitting the ball in a court means that there is always a possibility of hitting
the opponent by the ball or the racket.
To avoind dangerousness there is a rule called LET and STROKE in squash.
If a player thought he/she may hit the opponent by the ball or the racket
in cotinueing the play, and he/she stopped the racket, LET or STROKE is applied accordingly.
It's not easy for beginers to decide when to stop the racket,
but if you think there's dangerousness, please stop the racket.
When you stop the racket, you say "Let, please", and wait for the refree's decision.
Then the refree will answer "Stroke to your-name" or "Yes let" or "No Let"
"No let" is called when the player could not return the ball even if
there isn't opponent in the way.
Let
When a let is called, the rally in play becomes void and the rally is started from
the service again by the same server.
Stroke
Stroke means that a player was not able to hit the winning shot by the
interferance of the opponent and the player could not stroke.
And a point is given to the player if the player is the server or
hand-out is made if the player is not the server.
Difference of let and stroke
It's same that a player stops the racket in LET or STROKE.
If the opponent was not in the way although the player could not
hit the winning shot but could just return the ball, then the call will be a let.
If the opponent was not in the way and the player could
hit the winning shot then the call will be a stroke.
Who decides let or stroke?
The refree decides let or stroke.
The refree
There are two judges at the back of the court.
They are the refree and the marker.
The marker is a psuedo refree who calls easy decisions like out, fault, down,
or not up. Maker has roles of calling the score and writing the score to the score sheet.
Roles of the refree
1.Check if the marker is writing the score correctly.
2.Decide the player's appeals.
Correct the marker's call if the marker made a mistake.
Refree's decision is the final one even if the player or other people
make a claim.
The refree is needed to explain the situation or reason of the
decision if nessesary.
3.Check the time.
Roles of the marker
1.Most of the calls from the start to the end of the match.
Call includes announcing the points, let and stroke.
2.Write score to the score sheet.
