RECOMMENDED DISCS OF SEPTEMBER 1999
<ACM Rating: Listen Before You Buy ! Listen Before You Buy ! Tracklisting:
JONATHAN
BUTLER / SIGN OF LIFE
>
![]()
Jonathan Butler, the
talented vocalist / guitarist / songwriter coming from
South Africa, setteled in Los Angeles after releasing 6
albums including the awesome instrumental guitar album
"Introducing Jonathan Butler" (1985) and "Jonathan
Butler" (1987) full of his soft and sophistcated vocal
tunes, via London and then in New York. On the former
album "Do You Love Me?" (1997), Jonathan revealed his
songwriting talent matched with the L.A. City-Breezing
atomosphere. And on this album, Jonathan plays gentle and
melodious acoustic guitar and also sings soft and mellow
but with passion and soulfulness. This is one of the best
Westcoast Black AOR album in this decade. For your
information, Japanese version includes one extra guitar
instrumental tune "Butterfly Lane" as a bonus track.

<ACM Rating: The players featuring this album are really awesome as
you can see as below!! I believe you will be knocked out
by Jay Graydon's incredible
super guitar play on the track 2 "Ima Demo Anata Ga Suki
Dakara",which means "Don't Ever Forget Why I Love You",
featuring Tommy Funderburk
on the lead vocal. And when you will listen to the track3
"Over and Over" featuring Jason
Scheff on the lead vocal with Bill
Champlin, you may be touched as you listen to
Chicago's "Will you still love me?" or "If She Would Been
Faithful". First 3 tracks which means the beofre-entioned
2 tracks plus Marliyn Martin lead vocal track "Tatoe Toku
Hanaretemo (Anytime,
Anyplace, Anywhere You Are
<noncommital tranlated
title>)"are perfect. If the all the tracks
included on this album had same quality as those, I gave
5 star to this album. Amy Sky tried to sing wonderful as
usual, although the arrangement of the tune is far from
the ine she can receak her real talent as a voalist.
Joseph Williams's lead vocal track "Dear My Friend" is
not bad. Lalah Hathaway and Philip Ingram did well. But
some tracks reveals the difference of their vocal talent
comparing with the best vocalists featuring on this
album. So, I gave only 3 stars to this album. But if you
are really fond of Jay Graydon's awesome guitar, you must
buy this album without any hesitation. International

SONGS FROM L.A.

This album is the special compliation album
gathering cover versions by Westcaost musicians. of
Japanese pop group "Every Little Thing" known as "ELT",
comprising of 1 female vocalist with 2 male supported
musicians/songwriters. This kind of project was very
popular in early 90's here in Japan as you may know the
series of compilation albums compilating Japanese pops
cover versions such as "Tatsuro
Songs From L.A." in mid 90's, so, if you are
insterested in such kind of project albums, this album
would be another one for you. the most popular Japanese
pop group"Every Little Thing".

TRIBUTE TO GARTH BROOKS - new friends in love
-
>
![]()
This album seems to be attractive when you see
the involved singers in this tribute project. They did
well basically, but the problem is that this is the
tribute to Garth Brooks, the country music star. On some
tribute albums or complilation albums gathering cover
versions, we can enjoy the difference of arrangement
between the original version and covered or tributed
version. But, this is not. So, if you would like to
collect all the related lead vocal works by your
favourite artists. That's all why I dare to review this
album. This is not a recommendable album for AOR/Adult
Contemporary Music nor Melodious Hard Rock fans, just for
Country Music fans.

DAVID
LASLEY / MISSIN' TWENTY GRAND
>
When you listen to David Lasley's falsetto
vocals and his songwritings heavily influenced by black
music, you might not think he is a blue-eyed soul singer
songwriter. (I don't know whether his eyes is blue or
not.....) David's professional music career was started
as the lead vocalist of "Rosie" which released the album
"Better Late Than Never" in 1976 and 2nd album "Last
Dance" in 1977. David moved to Los Angeles and wrote many
Westcoast hit tunes such as "Jojo" performed by Boz
Scaggs and this gave him a chance to get a deal as a solo
artist. In 1982, David released this 1st solo album
"Missin' Twenty Grand" containing the hit tune "If I Had
My Wish Tonight" written by Randy
Goodrum and David Loggins ranked # 36 on the US
chart. On this reissued CD, 4 songs taken from his 2nd
solo album "Rain Dance" (1984 EMI America, ST-17118) are
added as bonus tracks. For your information, David
released his 3rd solo album "Soldiers On The Moon" only
in Japan in 1989 under Pony Canyon Japan.

AMBROSIA
/ ROAD ISLAND
>
![]()
This is Ambrosia's 5th album. After releasing
this album, Ambrosia had stopped their band activity
until 1990. As you know, Ambrosia has restarted their
live performances and also released their Anthology album
including 2 brand-new songs in 1997. On this 5th album,
you can listen to more British progressive Ambrosia
sounds, their musical roots shown on their 1st and 2nd
albums. So, do not complain to me that this is not pure
Westcoast album comparing their masterpiece
albums "One Eighty" or "Life
Beyond L.A.".

JERRY
CORBETTA / JERRY CORBETTA
>
![]()
Jerry Corbetta got known by his activity with
the band named "Sugerloaf" released the same title album
including Billboard #3 hit "Green-Eyed Lady" in 1970.
Jerry disbanded Sugerloaf in 1977 and at the same time
got the solo artist deal with Warner Bros. On this first
solo album "Jerry Corbetta" released in 1978, Jerry
revealed his talent as a singer-songwriter very much and
you can enjoy not only Jay
Graydon's exellent guitar paly but also well-known
wonderful tune "I Wish That I Was Making Love (To You
Tonight)" covered by Alessi in
1979. Fine Pop Westcoast album this is.
