BECKLEY-LAMM-WILSON / LIKE A BROTHER

<ACM Rating: >

A collaboration between America's Gerry Beckley, Chicago's Robert Lamm, and the late Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys has just been released on June 20 in the United States! What a wonderful music this album includes! Phil Galdston, known for his duo works with Peter Thom "Far Cry" who released the acclaimed masterpiece album "The More Things Change ..." produces this super project. The recording session for this album was started in 1993 and finished in the beginning of 1995. It was reported that 13 materials were finished for this project album. During they started label shopping, Carl Wilson was gone on Feb. 6, 1998. Thus, Jerry Beckley decided to include "Hidden Talent", one of 4 first recording session materils on the Ameirca's album "Human Nature" and Robert Lamm also released his solo album "In My Head" in July 1999 with 2 alternative versions "Watching The Time Go By" and "Standing At Your Door" originally prepared for this project. However, this project never die. On June 20, 2000 the remix and remastered version of this project recordings are completed!
One years later, Japanese version is on the street with awesome 3 bonus tracks. "Blue After All" is one of 4 first recording session materials. And you can listen to the original version of "Standing At Your Door" too. "In The Dark" is one of the unreleased materials for Jerry Beckley's next solo album featuring Lamm and Wilson.

LITTLE RIVER BAND / WHERE WE STARTED FROM

<ACM Rating: >

Little River Band ... History of the band began in 1974 with Derek Pellicci (ds), Graham Davidge (g), Graham Goble (g, back vo), Beeb Birtles (g, back vo) and Glenn Shorrock (lead vocals). They had many smash hits worldwide in late 70's such as "Help Is On It's Way", "Happy Anniversary" (1977), "Reminiscing" (1978), "Cool Change" and "Lonesome Loser"(1979). In 1980, Wayne Nelson (b),one of the current member joined the band. "Time Exposure" (1981), the last album featuring the original lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock, also includes smash hits "Take It Easy On Me" and "Man On Your Mind". 1983 was the turning point for the band. after Glenn Shorrock left the band, John Farnham joined and it made the sound of LRB a little bit melodic-hard than Glenn Shorrock era. Stephen Housden (g), another current member also joined in the same year. Beeb Birtles left the band before the release of their hard-edge 1984 album "Playing To Win", which was not successful commercially. Thus, Graham Goble went back to their roots full of harmony arrangements and released hidden masterpiece album "No Reins" (1985).

In 1988, Glenn Shorrock came back to the band replacing John Farnham, and released the good album "Monsoon"(1988). Graham Goble left after the release of the "Get Lucky"(1990), They released the album "Worldwide Love" in 1991 with remarkable additional musicians such as Tony Sciuto (key, g, vo) and Peter Beckett (g, vo). On their live album "Live Classics" (1992), Peter Beckett is credit as the full-time member of LRB. After Tony and Peter Beckett have left LRB by the end of 1997, Stephen Housden reformed the group, using guests from his and Graham Goble's solo works, Steve Wade (lead vocals) and first LRB bassist, Roger McLachlan. In late 1999, Steve Wade left to pursue a solo career. And now in 2000, Wayne Nelson(b) takes over the lead vocals parts also well-known for his fantastic projects LA Cowboys "Endless Summer" release with James Studer. Wayne Nelson does well on this brand-new album as the new lead vocalist under the big name "Little River Band".

GENAI / HEAVENS NOT SO FAR AWAY

<ACM Rating: >

VideoArts Music, Japan would proudly present you world-premier 2nd album of "Genai", the New Jazz 'n' Soul Unit "Heavens Not So Far Away". This must be one of the good Adult Contemporary album for your summer of 2000. Robbie Danzie, new female lead singer joins this project, which makes GENAI much more attractive. <ACM Rating: >

Tom Kelly / Billy Steinberg legendary Westcoast/AOR unit, i.e. I-TEN's one and only album "Taking A Cold Look" has just reissued on CD again. You can fully enjoy excellent works by this songwriter team known for their hit songs such as "Like A Virgin" performed by Madonna, "True Colors" performed by Cyndy Lauper, "So Emotional" performed by Whitney Houston and/or "Alone" performed by Heart. As a matter of fact, this album had been reissued early 90's in Europe. The CD was made in Austria and its serial number was 46667-2. This CD is quite rare and has been out of print for a long time. The masterpiece album "Taking A Cold Look" is now available under Rewind Records, the group of Song Haus Music Group, USA.

STEVE EATON / STEVE EATON

<ACM Rating: >

Vivid Sound, Japan has just reissued one of the hard-to-find AOR/Westcoast hidden masterpieces again! Steve Eaton was the core member of the early 70's legendary group "Fat Chance" known for another core member Bill LaBounty. Steve Eaton released his first solo folky album "Hey Mr. Dreamer" in 1974 under Capitol Records, USA, featuring the original version of "All You Get Love Is A Love Song" well-konwn by Carpenter's version. This second solo album "Steve Eaton" was released in 1979 under the minor label named "Mountain Bluebird", which made us to be aware of the release of this great album. On this album, Steve Eaton changed his music style into more sophisticated and having a little blue-eyed soul flavor. The atmosphere of the music on this album reminds me Marc Jordan's "Mannequin" and/or "Blue Desert". One of the most recommendable reissue titles of this year! And surprisingly 4 unreleased tracks is added!

BOBBY KING / BOBBY KING

<ACM Rating: >

Bobby King got a chance to release several singles in 1973 supported by Ry Cooder. Since then, Ry Cooder placed Bobby as the front vocalist on his mid/late 70's albums such as "Bop 'Til You Drop" (1979). The success with Ry Cooder gave Bobby solo artist deal. This is Bobby King's first solo album "Bobby King" (1981) produced by Steve Barri. As you know, there are several Black AOR masterpiece albums such as Leslie Smith's "Heartache". This album is said to be another fine Black AOR album in early 80's.

CHUNKY, NOVI & EARNIE / CHUNKY, NOVI & EARNIE II

<ACM Rating: >

Do you know who Ilene Rappaport is? Needless to say, I did not know till I read the liner notes of "Chunky, Novi & Earnie" reissued CD written by Toshi Nakada. This is the actual name of Chunky, later well-known as Lauren Wood. When you listen to Chunky, Novi & Earnie's first album, even though you are fully aware that this is 1973 album, I believe you are not so touched. Please note that this fisrt album just shows their musical background and roots. The first album did not sell well. Therefore they lost deal with Warner Bros once. However they succeeded to resign with Warner Bros again with their 2nd album "Chunky, Novi & Earnie 2" in 1977. I believe you feel that 2nd album is totally different from 1st because there are many contemporary pop tunes here and there.

JOHN O'BANION / DANGER

<ACM Rating: >

It is a little complicated for me to review "Danger" because this album is his 3rd album here in Japan but his 2nd album in the United States. After big success of his debut album with "Love You Like I Never Loved Before" both in Japan and in the States, John O'Banion performed live in Japan and he won the grand prix at Tokyo Music Festival with his new song "I Don't Want To Lose Your Love" in the spring of 1982, which made him more popular in Japan. Wea Japan would strongly hope that they should release John O'Banion's new album as soon as possible. Thus, the album "Close Up" comprising of 7 new studio recording tracks later included on his US 2nd album "Danger" plus 3 live tracks "Thru The Eyes Of Love", "Standing On The Edge" and "Caught" recorded in Japan in April 1982. And several months later, we had his full studio recording album "Danger". It is my impression that this album has been very popular especially in Europe more than in Japan and in the States. So, I believe many European AOR/Westcoast freaks are now feeling very happy.

ENGLAND DAN & JOHN FORD COLEY / DR. HECKLE AND MR. JIVE

<ACM Rating: >

In 1971, young Dan Seals and John Ford Coley released their duo debut single "New Jersey" as England Dan & John Ford Coley under A&M Records. They could not get big success and lost recording artist deal accordingly. In 1976, they met with fatal tune "I'd Rather Love To See You Tonight" written by Parker McGee. They got recording deal with Big Tree Records with this song and "I'd Rather Love To See You" ranked #2 in the States. The following Top 10 single "Nights Are Forever Without You" pushed them into big names in late 70's. The album "Nights And Forever" is their stepping stone album recorded in Hendersonville. On the other hand, "Dr. Heckle And Mr. Jive" (1979) was released after 3 successful albums, recorded in Los Angeles with L.A. top studio musicians. It may be interesting to compare with the difference of the atmosphere in terms of those 2 albums.

PLAYER / SPIES OF LIFE

<ACM Rating: >

Player succeeded their 1st album sales with their Billboard #1 Hit "Baby Come Back" in 1978, In spite of this success, Peter Beckett had to experience member-change of the group every when they released their 2nd, 3rd and 4th albums. Due to unsuccessful sales of their 2nd and 3rd albums, this album was underestimated although many good tunes such as "If Looks Could Kill", "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" and "I'd Rather Be Gone". I hope everyone would revaluate this album when the album is now reissued on CD.

ROSIE / BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

<ACM Rating: >

In early 70's, David Lasley performed on stage for the well-known musical "Hair". David met Lynn Pitney and Lana Marrano there. This was the starting of the group Rosie. At the early stage, they performed also with Arnold McCuller and the name of the group was "Spoonspell". After all, Arnold left the group and renamed the group as "Rosie". In 1976, they released their 1st album "Better Late Than Never". They show R&B, Soul flavor all through this album. This album features Lasley/Marrano composition “Roll Me Through the Rushes,” later a big song for Chaka Khan in 1978. Please reconfirm David Lasley's marvelous vocal talent by listening this early works.

DAVID LASLEY / SOLDIERS ON THE MOON

<ACM Rating: >

David Lasley released his 3rd solo album towards the Japanese market in 1989 under the new label of those days called as "Pacific Coast Highway" (Pony Canyon, Japan). This albums starts from the Carole King's famous tune "It's Too Late" and ends to Randy Newman's tune "I Think It's Going To Rain Today". This album includes 8 cover tunes, which would prove how David could sing beautifully. Supporting musicians should be written for my visitors; Jeff Porcaro (drums), David Benoit (piano), Greg Karukas (Key), Abe Laboriel (bass), Marty Walsh (Guitar), Rita Coolidge (Back Vo) and Luther Vandross (Back Vo). This CD used copy is not so hard to find in these days but Cool Sound added 5 bonus tracks.....

ROSEMARY BUTLER / ROSE

<ACM Rating: >

Magic Records, the French leading reissue label is now re-releasing very interesting albums. One is the Player's "Spies Of Life" which is also reissued here in Japan. As BMG Japan's version is digitally remastered in K2 Mastering, Magic's version is also digitally remastered in high definition 24 bit. Another one is this one, the solo album "Rose" of Rosemary Butler (a well-known backing vocalist working with Lida Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt). This album was originally planned and released only for Japanese market in 1983. In those days, Rosemary Butler was very active here in Japan with 3 Japanese movie theme songs such as "Call Of The World" for the movie "Winning Run" and/or "Children Of The Light" for the animated movie "Genma Taisen". Therefore, it was very surprising for me to hear that Magic has reissued this album in France. Please note that the tracklisting of this reissued CD is different from the original Japanese version. gwriting credit, Glen Ballad, Clif Magness, Jay Gruska wrote tunes for this album.

RAY GOOLIAK / HOME AWAY FROM HOME

RAY GOOLIAK / ISLE SAY

<ACM Rating: >

Ray Gooliak is one of the finest Hawaiian singer-songwriter. However please note that Ray is not native Hawaiian but coming from Kentucky. "Home Away From Home" was originally released in 1979. When you will listen to his album "Home Away From Home" without any information about his career, you must feel that Ray is the one of the Los Angeles based Westcoast singer such as Ned Doheny and/or CSN&Y. "Maui On My Mind" is very impressive tune, which I believe you will satisfy with. As a matter of fact, I had no chance to listen to Ray Gooliak's albums before getting those reissued CDs. And when I start listening "Home Away From Home" in order to decide how many stars I should put as ACM Rating, my first impression is that 3.5 Stars are enough for the album. But I am obliged to change my mind upon listening to the tune "Maui On My Mind". As a result, as you see, I put 4 stars for "Home Away From Home" album.
