RECOMMENDED DISCS OF DECEMBER, 2000

NEW RELEASES

BRUCE HIBBARD / TIME WAITS

<ACM Rating: >

First of all, you should know that this is not a kind of unreleased materials / demos collection CD. Yes, Bruce Hibbard, known for his masterpiece CCM/AOR album "Never Turnin' Back", breaks two-decades-silence with this brand-new album "Time Waits" now. Bruce Hibbard shows his top quality melodies survives as he did 20 years ago. I believe that the Opening tune "The Years" must attract you when you listen to it only once. The best tune of this album "Time Waits" follows up. If I dare to inform you of the only regrettable thing for this album, it must be the cheap drum programming all through the album. However, Hibbard Melodies are surprisingly much greater than those appeared on his masterpiece "Never Turnin' Back". You must buy this right now without any hesitation.

GREG GUIDRY / SOUL'D OUT

<ACM Rating: >

Bouncing back onto the AOR/Westcoast music world, Greg comes on strong with 11 new songs in his familiar style, and it is reported that "Soul'd Out" is in its final stages of production and is slated for a release accordingly. For Japanese listeners, COOL Sound has just released "Soul'd Out" on December 10. "Soul'd Out" had been originally planned to be released under Emerald Records, his own label in 1998 with the alternative track listing. Instead of self-release only in the limited market, Gregg continued to seek for wider distribution possibility and a suitable label and sent out the rough-mix tape of this album with his unreleased collection, which has been released as "Private Session" last summer, to Cool Sound, Japan early spring 2000. As a result, Gregg finally found out most suitable label for his brand-new album "Soul'd Out" and at the same time Gregg decided to revise the track listing a little bit to add several old recording materials, "Ball And Chain" and "Number One" recorded in 1989 and also add a brand-new recording material "Send This Dedication". I am very pleased to let you introduce a new good Blue-eyed Soul album in 2000.

Michael McDonald / THE VOICE OF Michael McDonald

<ACM Rating: >

Rhino Records is now presenting you Michael McDonald's compilation album from the Doobie Brothers years to an out-take of "Blue Obsession" originally planned to be released under Warner Music in 1998. 4 Doobies tunes featuring Michael McDonald;"Takin' To The Street", "What A Fool Believes", 14 solo-years works including 2 previously unissued tracks "Higher Ground" originally performed by Stevie Wonder and "Tell It Like It Is" known by Aaron Nevil's version are gathered on this collection album. It might be remarked that "Yah Mo B There" duet with James Ingram from Ingram's album "It's Your Night" (1983) and "On My Own" duet with Patti Labelle appeared on Patti's album "Winner In You" (1986) can be listened on this album. And further, What should I say the fact that David Pack's "I Just Can't Let Go"(1985), on which Michael sings background with James Ingram are also included? It is a little bit strange that this best album is only available either in Europe and in Japan, but not available in the United States.

REISSUES

ROBERT BYRNE / BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT

<ACM Rating: >

Robert Byrne established his songwriter status by 1977 American Song Festival Grand-Prix with "Bound To Know The Blues" and 1978 winning tune of the same festival "I'll Love Your Leavin' Away". Thus, Robert Byrne got a chance to release his own solo album "Blame It On The Night" in 1979 under Mercury USA. However, only several months later this album was deleted from Mercury Catalogue, which made a little bit difficult to get this album in spite of popularity among AOR/Westcoast music freaks here in Japan. Almost one year later, we could see this album again here in Japan with the revised artworks often done in those days as Japanese marketing strategy. There were many successful revised artworks such as "Bill LaBounty / Bill LaBounty" and/or "Roby Duke / Not The Same", but as regards the revised jacket design of this Japanese version (done by Masao Igawa using the not-sophisticated photography taken by Akira Kobayashi and himself), most people says it should not have been done. Considering the majority's opinion, this reissue CD is done with the original US vinyl jacket. I guess you may not feel why everyone praises this album when you listen to only the opening tune "Baby Fat", a kind of cheap disco tune. When you find that "Blame It On The Night", the one of the most sophisticated and perfect ballads in 20th century, follows, you are obliged to agree with the people admiring Robert Byrne. And further you must be knocked out once you listen to the next track "That Didn't Hurt Too Bad". Please note that there is another album led by Robert Byrne, which is "An Eye For An Eye" released in 1981 as "Barne and Byrnes".

FARAGHER BROS / FAMILY TIES

<ACM Rating: >

Faragher Brothers were born and raised in Long Beach California. Danny and Jimmy, elder Faragher brothers started to play and release not a few single records in late 60's as the member of the soft rock band named "Peppermint Trolley Company". In early 70's, Danny and Jimmy formed new band named "Bones" and release an album with Billboard top 100 hit single "Robera" in 1972 and the album "Waiting Here" followed in 1973. After disbanding "Bones", Danny and Jimmy decided to start the new band with Tommy and Davey, two younger Faragher brothers. Soon, they could got a deal with ABC Records who wanted to find new Blue-Eyed soul mellow funk bands. In 1976, their first album "Faragher Bros" was released and "Family Ties" followed in 1977, both of which did not sell well. In 1978, Faragher Bros made a deal with Polydor and released their 3rd album "Open Your Eyes" with top 50 soft-mellow flavored rock hit "Stay The Night", on which Marty Faragher, youngest Faragher brothers and their sister Pammy Faragher joined. Then, they renamed the band name as " The Faraghers" and released straight rock album in 1979. For your information, you can listen to Tommy Faragher's solo tracks on the movie soundtrack album "Stayin' Alive".

THE KEANE BROTHERS / THE KEANE BROTHERS

<ACM Rating: >

I believe you have several unforgettable genius brothers names; one should be "Porcaro" (Jeffrey, Steve, Mike). Someone may say "Williams" (Joseph and Mark T.). "Keane" should be another one. Tom Patrick Keane (born on March 13, 1964) and John Morgan Keane (born on April 26,1965) grew up in Los Angeles. To our surprise, the Keane brothers got a deal with 20th Century Records when they were only 11/12 years old. And this is the very first album of The Keane Brothers produced by David Foster. Out of 10 songs on this album, Tom wrote 9 songs, all of which are really great Westcoast pops. Tom's vocal might sound like those done by Hanson in 90's becuase of his age but you may confirm Tom's excellent potential talent as a singer by listening to this album. In 1979, Keane brothers released another album "Taking Off" under abc Records produced by Lamont Dozier (except 2songs done by David Foster and David Paich). Then the brothers kept silent for 2 years and in 1981 they appeared in front of Japanese music lovers with the album "Keane" as the band "Keane" with Mark Moulin (guitars) and Mike Millwood (bass). As you may know, "Today Tomorrow And Tonight" followed in 1982.

LISA DAL BELLO / LISA DAL BELLO

<ACM Rating: >

It was 1977 that Lisa Dal Bello, a young Italian/UK-origin female singer coming from Canada, got a chance to release her first solo album supported by TOTO members. On this debut album, she wrote all 10 songs, 3 of which are co-written with David Foster, the producer of this album, and 1 of which is co-written with Roy Kenner. You should note that she got Juno Awards (Best New Vocalist of the year) by this funky and emotional album. Someone may recall her impressive with Boz Scaggs on "Miss Sun", the demo version of which can be also listened on "TOTO XX" album. For your information, Lisa released 5 more solo albums; "Pretty Girls" (1979), "Drastic Measures" (1981) and so on.

MARK-ALMOND / OTHER PEOPLES ROOMS

<ACM Rating: >

First of all, please do not confuse Mark-Almond with Marc Almond (ex Soft Cell). Mark-Almond is the duo unit comprising of Jon Mark and Johnny Almond. This duo released 4 albums with CBS in early 70's and disbanded once. In 1976, they restarted their collaboration and moved to United States to release "To The Heart" with abc Records. Tommy Lipuma, a great producer offered them to release an album under Horizon, Tommy's own label. As shown on the album jacket, this album's mood is a European-flavored sophisticated jazzy night music, which is a little bit similar with those of Michael Franks.

KENJI OMURA / KENJI SHOCK

<ACM Rating: >

I guess you may be a little bit surprised to find that I am reviewing Japanese artist's album here. I also listen to Japanese artists albums featuring many L.A. session musicians and admit many excellent albums are existing but seldom review them here before because I would like to concentrate on reviewing non-Japanese artists' works basically. However I cannot help leaving this reissued CD unreviewed because this album is one of the true masterpiece fusion album done by Japanese. Kenji Omura was well-known as his guitar performance with Yellow Magic Orchestra in early 80's worldwide. I use the word "was" because this greatest Japanese guitarist is gone. (Kenji passed away in November 18,1998 at the age of 49. This album "Kenji Shock" was his 2nd solo album and has been reissued very first time on CD in the winter of 2000. This album is full of awesome smooth soulful guitar play made by Kenji Omura supported by L.A. top musicians including supporting guitarists like Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour, and other TOTO members, i.e. Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and David Paich. Kenji's guitar play on this album would be as great as other giant guitarists like Larry Carlton. Highly recommendable fusion album of late 70's!
