Cool Sound released 3 Alan Sorrentti's Italian AOR/Westcoast albums in November. Alan Sorrentti challenged to sing in English on his 4th album "Sienteme, It's Time To Land" ('76) recoreded in San Francisco. "Figli Delle Stelle" ('77) recorded in Los Angeles featuring Jay Graydon and David Foster, the two Westcoast giants, followed. In 1979, "L.A. & N.Y.", A-side of which was produced by Jay Graydon, was released. To our regret, "Di Notte" ('80) could not been reissued due to the copyright matters. But, you can experience Italian AOR/Westcoast goodies. |

Polystar, Japan was one of the most aggressive labels releasing AOR/Westcoast new-recording albums in early 90's. Unfortunately they changed their company management policy and thus never release brand-new AOR//Westcoast albums since late 90's. However, they have reissued their out-of-print collections on December 21, 2001 and now you can experience good 90's AOR/Westcoast albums again. Here is the reissued CDs; |

<ACM Rating: Greg Mathieson seems to be very aggressive recently for releasing
CDs. Following the great live album "Live At The Baked Potato"
with Abraham Laboriel, Michael Landau and Vinnie Colaiuta. New duet
album with Abraham Laboriel has just been released. The liner notes
on the CD says "This project has a simple origin. Poet Quincy
Troupe invited Greg and Abraham to play as a duet to provide musical
counterpoint for an evening of poetry readings by such gifted artists
as Amiri Baraka. Their dialogue was a joy for them and for those who
listened. They decided to experiment more with this format and wrote
pieces to highlight that dialogue, to accent and interaction of just
two voices. These tunes were recorded in a single take without overdubs
to capture the intimacy and excitement of the conversation. Enjoy."

<ACM Rating: Cool Sound presents you another rare material collection CD. This
time, you will have the Sneaker's early years rare materials including
demos for their sensational debut album "Sneaker" and unreleased
materials selected by Toshi Nakada. Toshi selected 12 tunes out of
23 candidates including "More Than Just The Two O Us" alternative
version featuring Mitch Crane on the lead vocal and a little bit classical
instrumental piece. This collection album mainly includes early-years
demos before releasing their 1s album as the title shows. And, it
should be noted that the closing tune "Without Your Love"
is the demo recorded in 1983 after the sudden bankrupt of the record
company. You will find out how the Sneaker got a deal by listening
to this album. International Order

MICHAEL McDONALD / IN THE SPIRIT - A CHRISTMAS ALBUM - |
<ACM Rating: |
||
|
|
|||
Michael McDonald's Christmas album has just been released under MCA Nashville, one of major labels, not under Michael's own label. As you know, many Christmas albums tend to be a collection of traditional songs. However, this album includes 7 new songs written by Michael with other talented songwriters for the album. And Michael covers "On Christmas Morning" written by David Foster and Kenny Loggins in 1989. Only 3 songs are traditional tunes. Enjoy this great holiday music throughout your prosperous 2002 year! |

MARI FALCONE / UNTO HIM THIS CHRISTMAS |
<ACM Rating: |

Mari Falcone began her professional career in the 80's touring with Donna Summer, and since then has toured with Amy Grant, Deniece Williams and Kevyn Lettau. And since moving to LA, Mari started writing and playing for Christian artists like Debby Boone and Kim Hill. In 2000, Mari created her all-instrumental solo debut CD "And All This", which is a perfectly blend of all kind of musical sensibilities. And foe 2001 Christmas, Mari competed her 2nd solo effort "Unto Him This Christmas" with her message "May the Prince of Peace visit your heart and home as you listen to this music. Merry Christmas". |

JANEY CLEWER & BRUCE GAITSCH / ONE ON ONE |
<ACM Rating: |
|

|
It was the late summer of 1998 that I had reported Bruce Gaitsch (Guitar) and Janey Clewer (Piano) completed their collaborated works, on which you would find the perfect peace between the piano and guitar. However, the CD release had been postponed for almost 2 years. And now, I am pleased to let you know that this beautiful album will be available through Angelynn Records in the Fall of 2001. Bruce explains this album as follows: "This record is a labor of love... my love for Janey and her music. I've never met anyone half as talented as my wife. She not only writes amazing music, but here is the proof that she can play it too. All of her piano performances are one takes, no punching in. Not so for the guitar... Some of these songs have been sitting in her piano bench for years... Now we can share them with you... Enjoy." I admit from the bottom of my heart that all the performances on this album are most sophisticated music, they make us calm and gentle. No words needed... Excellent. This work may be categorized as New Age or Healing Music if I have to do so. Worthwhile listening if you should not like such type of music. You can order this long-waited album now at Angelynn Music website. |

Another long-waited reissue will soon be achieved. Canadian
AOR / West Coast leading singer, Tim Feehan's sensational debut album
as the band Footloose is it. Compared to his solo albums, Footloose
is more West Coast vein one. The opening track "Leaving For Maui"
is very good soft and mellow piece, which were covered by many artists
in Hawaii.

DICK ST. NICKLAUS / SWEET AND DANDY |
<ACM Rating: |

It was 1979 that Dick St. Nicklaus's 1st album "Magic" was a kind of boom in Osaka, the second largest city of Japan located in western part of Japan, near Kyoto. Osaka has a diffent atmosphere and their own cluture and in those days thet were keen to find out some unfamiliar artists by themselves. One was Dick St. Nicklaus. Sony Music Osaka branch A&R decided to release "Magic" limited in Kansai (western part of Japan surrounding Osaka) and this trial was succeded. The album sold well and thus "Magic" was released all over Japan. Dick St. Nicklaus got a deal for his 2nd album "Sweet And Dandy" with Sony Music Japan. This album is opened by the catchy tune "Bye Bye Baby" clearly inspired by the keyboard rhythm pattern used by Doobie Borthers on their smash hit "What A Fool Believes". The beautiful ballads tune "Love, Love, Love" was covered by Bill Medley on his 1981 album "Liberty" later. |

BILL HUGHES / DREAM MASTER |
<ACM Rating: |
|||
|
|
||||
Bill Hughes is another artists besides Dick St. Nicklaus who were strongly supported by Sony Music Japan Osaka Branch in the autumn of 1979. Bill Hughes started his professional music career as a member of the soft rock band "Lazarus" in early 70's under Bearsville Records. In 1977, Bill got a deal as a solo artist with CBS Records Canada. Thus "Dream Master" had been created. As you can see the below, great Westcoast studio musicians were involved. Bill performed soft and mellow tunes all through this album. We had to wait for Bill Hughes next album until 1991. It was "Welcome To The Edge", which was released under the name of Billie Hughes and as you may know Bill changed not only his first name but also music style.... |

DAVID GARFIELD AND FRIENDS / MUSIC FROM RIDING BEAN |
<ACM Rating: |
|
|
|
You may assume that this album should be a kind of typical soundtrack for Japanese animation video, when you see the artwork of this album. Answer is definitely "No"! Once you start to listen to this album, you are obliged to change your basic stance when you come across this kind of soundtrack album. I am fully aware that some of AOR/Westcoast lovers seems to avoid buying soundtrack or concept albums due to their prejudice and I should point out how they lost chances to listen to good music. This soundtrack album can prove that my observation would be right. This music was written and recorded for a Japanese animation video called "Riding Bean" in 1988 featuring the L.A. "west coast" musicians mainly involved in David Garfield's project band "Karizma". Therefore, this might be said to be alternative or hidden Karizma album. In addition to very very excellent instrumental tunes such as "Bean Bandit Boogie" featuring super guitar performance by Michael Landau, you are able to enjoy several vocal tunes featuring Phil Perry. This CD had been one of the hardest-to-get CDs for a long time. Now is the chance to experience this hidden treasure! |

"Willing Heart" is CCM female singer Kelly Willard's 2nd album. Kelly sings all the tunes with her beautiful female voice. Kelly wrote all songs by herself except "Comfortable With You", " Faithful Love" and "Hold On" with Hadley Hockensmith, "A Million Ways" with Pita Delamater and "Only You" with Bruce Hibbard. Fabulous CCM album! |

DIONNE WARWICK / FRIENDS IN LOVE |
<ACM Rating: |
|||
|
|
||||
A hard-to-get CD "Dionne Warwick / Friends In Love" (1982) <BVCM- 37275> has been re-reissued at last. This is one of the best Jay Graydon producing works. This album had been reissued in Japan in 1987 (1st reissue CD serial #: 32RD-101<by Nippon Phonogram on May 25, 1987>, 2nd reissue CD serial #: A32-D4 <by BMG Victor on November 5). It is not familiar but in fact this album was also reissued in Germany by BMG Germany in 1993 (CD serial # 74321 14015 2). Anyway, this album had been out-of-print for a long time. The album includes 3 tunes written by Jay Graydon, the opener "For You" with Richard Page and Steve George, "Friends In Love" with David Foster and Bill Champlin and "What Is This". And you may be aware that Dionne sings "Never Gonna Let You Go" on this album, which is much well-known by Sergio Mendes version released in 1983. Do not miss it this time. |

MELISSA MANCHESTER / SINGIN'... |
<ACM Rating: |

Melissa Manchester was discovered by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow when she performed in Manhattan clubs. Bette Midler and Barry Manilow hired her as a background vocalist in 1971. Then, Melisa got a change to record her debut album "Home to Myself" in 1973. "Singin'..." is Melissa's 6th album released in 1977, on which Melissa challenged to sing 9 other songwriter's tunes out of 10 tracks on this album. Among AOR/Westcoast lovers, her next album "Don't Cry Out Loud" is much popular, but try this one also! |

FRANK WEBER / FRANK WEBER |
<ACM Rating: |

|
|
||||
Frank Weber is one of the best New York based Adult Contemporary artist, who performs his jazz-flavoured vocals with piano-oriented melodies. I described his music style as more jazzy Billy Joel with Marc Jordan sensitivity when I reviewed his 1st album. . Frank covered "Straight Up And Fly Right" written in 1944 by Nat King Cole and Irving Mills on his first album, and on this second album Frank covered "Take It To The Limit" originally performed by Eagles. The difference of cover tunes on both album might be properly showing the difference of album's atmosphere. |

JAMES WALSH GYPSY BAND / JAMES WALSH GYPSY BAND |
<ACM Rating: |
|||
|
|
||||
The roots of James Walsh Gypsy Band is the Progressive rock outfit "Gypsy" whose origin came from the "Underbeats" formed in 1964. The band signed to the Metromedia label, releasing their self-titled double-album in 1970. 1971's album "In the Garden" followed. Upon Gypsy's 4th album "Unlock the Gates" was released in 1973, the group disbanded. (They reformed just long enough to play the Super Jam '77 concert at St. Louis' Busch Stadium.) A year later, James Walsh formed a new Gypsy and released this album "The James Walsh Gypsy Band" on RCA. The new lineup Gypsy revealed their strong presence by this album, positioned between Chicago and Sons Of Champlin,that is to say, the mixture of rock, jazz and funk with excellent vocal harmonies backed by fabulous horns. |
