Aspenites keep the memory of John Denver alive in
many ways, including a semi-hidden shrine in a grove of evergreens on Aspen
Mountain.
It's not uncommon to venture out into the Colorado wilderness
and hear John Denver's voice being whispered amongst the all-seeing eyes of
lonely aspen. Standing on top of the world at the peak of Trail Ridge Road can
make anyone experience a bona fide Rocky Mountain High. Thousands of people who
visit Aspen each year have ski and snowboarding supplies strapped to the top of
their car, but it's a much different scene each fall in the sweet Rocky Mountain
paradise. This year marks the 12th annual John Denver Week in
Aspen.
Highlights for the week include John Denver tribute concerts Oct.
9 and 10. On both nights, the Wheeler Opera house will be filled with John
Denver fans from around the world.
For the first time, the Windstar
Foundation and the Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be the
beneficiaries of both concerts, being sponsored by the Expect a Miracle Now
Foundation. The concerts will feature special guest Michael Johnson, along with
John Denver's former band members and colleagues, such as: Chris Nole, Pete
Huttlinger, Alan Deremo, Mack Bailey, Bill Danoff, Jim Horn, Mollie Weaver, John
Sommers and others. Oct. 9 concert will also include the presentation of the
John Denver Music and Humanitarian Award. Both concerts will be held at the
Wheeler Opera House, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $55, $75 and $125 for VIP, which
includes a reception after the show. Tickets may be purchased through the
Wheeler Opera House. For more information, please visit:

John Adams
and Friends — Rocky Mountain High, Oct. 11
“He sounds exactly like me.”
That's how John Denver described John Adams after the two sang a duet of
“Whispering Jesse” on national television in Adams' native Holland. For those
who are ready and willing to walk down memory lane and relive a John Denver
concert, the John Adams and Friends concert is the one to see.
Adams
story is anything but simple, boring or common. After his duet with John Denver,
the two developed a friendship that lasted years after. Among the memorable
experiences together, the most vivid ones were their conversations about life,
their common love for acoustic guitars and environmental awareness. After John
Denver's tragic and untimely death, Adams moved to the United States with one
goal in mind: To keep the music and message of John Denver alive. For the past
38 years, Adams has performed throughout the United States, Germany, England,
Belgium, Holland, and extensively throughout Colorado.
At “Breck 150” at
the Riverwalk Center, Adams, along with his band, brought in an attendance of
600. Throughout his concerts, Adams happily shares stories about the times he
spent with John Denver.
When it comes to this guy, what you see is what you
get. He's just as warm, sincere and down to earth off stage as he is on stage.
As he puts it, “It's not about me or you. It's about me and you.” Keeping John
Denver's memory alive goes beyond the music. It's a way of life. He is
everything John Denver stood for and believed in. I'm not sure how he does it,
but Adams brings the spirit of John Denver alive on stage. Concert starts at 7
p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the Wheeler Opera House at (970) 920-5770.
Tickets are $35. For more information visit www.johnadamsmusic.com

CORRECTION
"Rocky
Mountain Christmas" DVD -
We had received information that John's TV Special
"Rocky Mountain Christmas" was to be released on dvd.
However, it now
appears this may have been inaccurate.
You can order a dvd with this title
from several online
shops, but the dvd is NOT the tv special. It
merely
includes Christmas scenes using the album of the same name
as
background music. (Thanks to Mary Ledford for this
information).

John Denver tribute will rekindle old flame
by Michel
Nolan
Contra Costa Times
9-4-09
Tonight we'll have a "Rocky
Mountain High" and I can't wait.
Under the stars at the Discovery Center's
amphitheater, the legendary John Denver lives again and I'll be transported back
to the time I was madly in love with him.
He never knew it, of course - I
was one of millions of sighing females. I did get to interview him on the phone
though, before his 1990-something concert at Snow Valley when Reba McEntire
opened for him.
My kids were brought up listening to his music and I played
his songs on my guitar (quite wretchedly) around the campfire.
In October,
it will be a dozen years since his experimental aircraft crashed into Monterey
Bay. Local performer Jim Curry returns to the Big Bear Amphitheater tonight in
a tribute to John and his timeless music. Jim's voice was heard in the CBS-TV
movie, "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story."
If you close your eyes, it's
as though John is really there. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice
and clean-cut look will take everyone back to the time when songs such as "Rocky
Mountain High," "Country Roads," "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" made John one of
RCA's top recording artists of all time.
"We're excited to have Jim Curry
and his tribute to John Denver's music close out our 2009 Music in the Mountains
Summer Concert Series at the Discovery Center," says Kathy Clapsaddle, San
Bernardino National Forest Association event manager.
"Jim embodies John
Denver's spirit and the strong message of his music to take care of the land and
each other. We're celebrating that through our Forest Aid program, a forest
restoration project in the San Bernardino National Forest."
Jim, who lives
in Upland with Anne, his fellow band member and wife of 29 years, has performed
John's music in sold-out shows throughout the country, emerging as today's top
performer of John's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits.
His heartfelt music
about caring for the Earth speaks to all ages - especially our youth - and in
that spirit, four Big Bear Valley youth leaders who have demonstrated exemplary
service through the SBNFA Children's Forest Youth Leadership Program will be
recognized for their service and commitment.
The honorees, B.J. Negrete,
William Elbert, Noah Cooke and Pearl Craig, will join Jim on stage prior to the
concert.
Bench seating is limited and beach chairs are recommended for the
open and casual seating areas. Bill Knick's Cafe will feature sandwiches,
salads, snacks, sodas and waters. Beer, wine and margaritas also will be
available.
All proceeds benefit the Forest Aid program.
Just the way
John Denver would have wanted it.
