“A ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH IN THE HEARTLAND”

            By Emily M. Parris

April 17, 2009 - Kansas City, MO - "The Music of John Denver"

  Kansas City Symphony 8:00pm

  Church of the Resurrection /

  5001 W. 137th Street / Leawood, KS 66224

  Guest Conductor: Lee Holdridge

The Church of the Resurrection is a huge, sprawling auditorium that is very impressive. On Friday, April 17th, it was filled by the beautiful music of John Denver and the Kansas City Symphony. Jim Curry was the lead singer along with his wife, Annie, Pete Huttlinger, Ritchie Gajate-Garcia, Alan Deremo, Tristan Garcia, Chris Wills and Diane Ireland. This church is where all the Kansas City “Pops” concerts are held so we were already familiar with the auditorium.

Lee Holdridge conducted the Kansas City Symphony for the concert.  The first selection was the most impressive of all – the “John Denver Overture” – a piece played just by the Symphony.  It was wonderful to have those familiar songs woven into an overture and played by our own Kansas City Symphony.

Jim Curry was the voice of John Denver in the made-for-tv movie, "Take Me Home, the John Denver Story". This experience inspired him to produce full-length John Denver tribute concerts. He is not an impersonator.

He sings in his own natural voice and sometimes he sounds a lot like John Denver.

Two large screens on each side of the stage showed John Denver, the musicians onstage, and other beautiful scenes from nature that John loved so much.  In the first half they sang “Rocky Mountain High”,

“Leaving On A Jet Plane”, “Annie’s Song” (which Jim dedicated to his own Annie), “Wild Montana Skies”, “Back Home Again”, “Shanghai Breezes”, “Eagles and Horses”, “Sunshine On My Shoulders”, the “Eagle and the Hawk” and the very important “Yellowstone Coming Home.”  “Yellowstone Coming Home” was the last song that John sang in concert but never recorded in a studio.

The lobby of the Church of the Resurrection is more like a mall than a church. There is nice seating, a coffee and snack shop and shopping areas with things of a religious nature for sale. In addition to that, the Kansas City Symphony had their usual refreshments for sale and there was a table with KC Symphony items as well as the cd’s of the other musicians in the show.

The second half of the program started out with “This Old Guitar” followed

By “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” and a wonderful medley of three love songs:

“My Sweet Lady” / “Perhaps Love” and “For You.” They were beautifully interwoven in the medley and sung with sincere emotion by Jim Curry.  After that Pete Huttlinger took center stage with his song “McGuire’s Landing.” He told a story to go along with it and everyone was very moved by the song.

At one point Marvin Gruenbaum played the fiddle for them. He plays the viola in the Kansas City Symphony and used to be in a group called “Spontaneous Combustion”. He always switches seamlessly from one type of

music to another in his “other band.”  We’ve always enjoyed all the groups in which he plays.  Diane Ireland also did a wonderful job playing the flute on several selections.

“Grandma’s Feather Bed” was next followed by “Matthew”. The only thing surprising to me was that there was not a big reaction to the song “Matthew.” I think many of the audience members were Kansas City Symphony

concert goers and weren’t aware of the local references in the lyrics of that song. Because when I went to a John Denver concert in Kansas City, MO many years earlier the audience just went wild when he sang about...

”a Kansas wheat field.”  They loved having John refer to our local area here in the heartland of the nation.

“Fly Away” was done beautifully with Annie singing the harmony. “Take Me Home, Country Roads” could not be left out and “Calypso” came next. Jim ended the concert on a quiet note with the beautiful “Poems, Prayers and Promises.”

Country Roads: A Celebration of John Denver

RICHARD PARR

March 31, 2009

Princess Theatre, Hunstanton / UK

Country music fans were treated to a wonderful and memorable evening paying tribute to one of the most prolific artists of this musical genre of the 20th century.

Singer guitarist Wayne Denton not only bears an uncanny physical resemblance to the late John Denver but he also has a voice to match and a hugely likeable personality.

All the John Denver classic hits were performed including Annie's Song, Rocky Mountain High, Take Me Home Country Roads, Poems, Prayers and Promises and Sunshine On My Shoulders.

There were also some lesser-known ones such as Follow Me, My Sweet Lady, Goodbye Again and the political comment song What Are We Making Weapons For?

The evening was enhanced by a series of video images on a giant screen on stage that matched the theme of the song being sung.

In a full program, Wayne, who was backed by his talented two-piece band and vocalist Jaime Lovett, saved the best until last with a beautiful rendition of John Denver's self-confessed own favourite - Perhaps Love - which he recorded with opera singer Placido Domingo.

What better way to end than the song that so sums up John Denver's career and life - This Old Guitar, containing the words “I love to sing my songs for you”? And how an appreciative Hunstanton audience loved hearing them.

The John Denver Orchestrations

From the program of the “The Music of John Denver” 4-17-09 KC, MO

“The Music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time, but that’s not the case with the original John Denver orchestrations. More than a decade had passed since the music of American composer John Denver has graced the stage of a symphony orchestra with the original orchestrations used by John himself.

The reason for this long absence was that the original orchestration parts had all been destroyed after John’s death in 1997. The only remaining parts left were the original composer scores, written in pencil and safely kept in a vault in California by the composer and arranger, Lee Holdridge.  What would possess someone to destroy hundreds of pages of American music history?  Especially works that were hand written in the 1970’s at a time when computer written music was not available. One can only guess that the people managing the John Denver estate did not know what they had or how valuable it was.

Not all is lost! When Jim Curry learned that the scores had been destroyed he embarked on a project together with Lee Holdridge that would take nearly 8 months.  To fulfill his desire for John’s music to live again in a symphony performance, Jim had commissioned the orchestra parts to be meticulously extracted from the penciled originals and readied for tonight’s world premiere with the Kansas City Symphony – an amazing moment in music history.”

Some nice words from Westword – Denver News:

Roll over, Sinatra: And tell Elvis the news. When it comes to raising money for public television, nobody beats John Denver - which is why KBDI went back to the well Monday, rerunning "John Denver: A Song's Best Friend", a documentary

produced in 2007. But Channel 12 had a new lure this time, tickets to

"John Denver: The Tribute," a June 27 Red Rocks concert that will feature Denver

tribute artist Roy Rivers and original Denver guitarist Steve Weisberg, and

commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Denver's final performance at Red

Rocks.

"It was our best prime-time night thus far with pledge," says KBDI membership director Shari Bernson. Although she didn't have total numbers as of Tuesday, Bernson says the ticket giveaway (you got two with a $150 pledge) was a major draw. "We were thrilled because so many not-for-profits don't know what to

expect right now, and a lot of public television stations took a hit in their

December pledge drives," she notes. The show and the offer will run again

Saturday.

Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash have all done all right for KBDI, but

nothing scores with Channel 12's audience like Denver. "His music appeals

to a broad base of people," Bernson says. "It just lifts you. I think maybe

the 1970s were a happier time for people, and folks get sentimental."

                Endings and Beginnings

                          by Richard Romanowski

I saw many peaceful sunsets and dawnings of the day

Both endings and beginnings on the bay at Monterey.

On one October evening with eagle’s faltered flight

A precious life was taken there and drawn into the light.

No more to give us wisdom in the lyrics of a song,

No more to warn and guide us, no more to right a wrong.

Yet the gifts John gave to us while with us on this earth

Are treasures to be valued and immeasurable in worth.

To incorporate these valued gifts into your daily life

Is to carry on his legacy in times of joy or strife.

So when you see a sunset know that dawn is hours away

Remember endings and beginnings on the bay at Monterey.
