RYAN PARCEL NOW IN FOREST SERVICE HANDS

   by Brent Gardner-Smith,

   Aspen Daily News Staff Writer

   Wednesday, June 10, 2009

The U.S. Forest Service now holds the title to the 35-acre Ryan parcel, a beautiful meadow between Ashcroft and the Pine Creek Cookhouse high in the Castle Creek Valley.

“It is now in the White River National Forest,” said Pitkin County Commissioner Patti Clapper. “We are planning a community celebration the first part of August.”

The formal transfer of the title to the Ryan parcel from Pitkin County to the federal government last week marks a decade of effort by Pitkin County to protect the meadow from residential development.

The county purchased the parcel for $3.2 million in 2000 with the intention of holding it for a brief time before the Forest Service could then trade it for nearby land worth the same amount.

The deal slowly got more complicated and it took an act of Congress in 2006, and approval by county voters last fall, to get it finalized.

Then it took seven more months to get the title for the land transferred to the Forest Service, which intends to leave the land undisturbed.

In exchange for the Ryan parcel, the federal government transferred the title to a 40-acre parcel of land along the Crystal River owned by the Bureau of Land Management to Pitkin County, as well as the title to 12 mining claims amounting to six acres of land on Smuggler Mountain surrounded by county and city open space.

While the prize of the deal, the Ryan parcel, has been duly secured in the White River National Forest, one more aspect of the complicated deal does still needs to be finalized.

The county still needs to sell nine acres of land for $2 million near Difficult campground — formally owned by the Forest Service — to local property owner Ted Skokos, who plans to fold the acreage into his existing land holdings and build a guest house on the property.

That transaction is said to be on track by county officials and is expected to soon be finalized.

       Windstar Redux

              by Cynthia Gullage

I sat in Windstar's meadow

And stresses slipped away,

There, peace descended on me

To set my thoughts in play.

Above cathedral mountains

Mid sunshine's sceptured sway

On wide-spread wings of wonder,

An eagle graced the day

The magic of the moment

Held me in speechless thrall,

Imparting, yet, the knowledge,

"John's with us, after all"
