Installing Kotoeri IRIZ Dictionaries

Introduction

ZenBase CD1, which was released in April 1995, contained in its "Zen Research Aids/Input Tools" directory, some Input Method dictionaries for Zen terms and Buddhist terms. I quote the description from http://www.iijnet.or.jp/iriz/irizhtml/zenbase/rese.htm.

The IRIZ Kana-Kanji input dictionary for Zen and Buddhist terms (for VJE, ATOK, Kotoeri, MS-IME, and WX2 for use on DOS, Windows, and Macintosh). This large dictionary contains most Zen terms, personal names, text titles etc. that you'll ever need to input. Additionally, it includes the full names of many modern Zen researchers.

After 8 years, many things have changed. There is no more VJE for Mac; the text file format for Kotoeri has changed... If you continued to use ATOK or Kotoeri, and continued to update the dictionaries, you may still continue to use this dictionary. But otherwise, it may be not so simple to use it.

I made the Kotoeri dictionarie for OS 9.2 and OS 10.2 from the text file of that dictionary. I made also the Kotoeri dictionaries for OS 9.2 and OS 10.2 for the Kuten Code conversion (from Kotoeri for OS 9.x (?) it seems that the Kuten Code conversion is dropped out...). I added the text files to the package.

Please download the package from this link (1.5 MB).

How to Install

A. For OS 9.2:

  1. Put the dictionary files "IRIZ_Zen_Dict" and "Kotoeri Kuten Code Dict" in the Preferences Folder, in your Classic OS System Folder.
  2. Launch a Classic application (so that you are in the Classic environment), and select Kotoeri in the Flag menu.
  3. Select in the Kotoeri menu "環境設定パレット表示".
  4. Click on the tab named "辞書".
  5. Select the newly installed dictionary files "IRIZ_Zen_Dict" and "Kotoeri Kuten Code Dict", and click on the button "開く".
  6. Drag the dictionary "ユーザー辞書" at the top of the list.
  7. Close the "環境設定パレット".
B. For OS 10.2:
  1. Put the dictionary files "IRIZ_Zen_Dict_X" and "Kotoeri Kuten Code Dict_X" in the Dictionaries Folder, inside your Library Folder (/Users/ni/Library/Dictionaries/).
  2. Make sure that you are in OS X environment, and select Kotoeri in the Flag menu.
  3. Select in the Kotoeri menu "環境設定を表示".
  4. Click on the tab named "辞書".
  5. Select the newly installed dictionary files "IRIZ_Zen_Dict" and "Kotoeri Kuten Code Dict", and click on the button "開く".
  6. Drag the dictionary "ユーザー辞書" at the top of the list.
  7. Close the window of the palette.
Now, try for example:
あっぷ ウルス・アップ
or
8183 體

That's it!

You will find in the files "IRIZZen.dic for Kotoeri.TXT" and "Kotoeri Kuten Code Dict.TXT" the contents of the dictionaries.
