How to Get to Kyumeikan from Narita

Before leaving for Japan you are advised to bring in cash at least \5,000 in \1,000 notes. This will save time and the inconvenience of standing in line at the Bureau Change.

Once through customs and immigration, it is useful and advisable to find the nearest bank of telephones and purchase a \1,000 telephone card for use with the public telephones. You can travel by taxi (more than \20,000 and coul take up to three hours in traffic) or bus (approximately \3,000 and can also take up to two hours in traffic) which will drop you off near Ikebukuro Station. However you eill still need to carry your luggage a couple of hundred meters to the station.

The easiest and most reliable method is by train. There are 3 trains you can take from the stations situated at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Narita. All 3 will take you to Nippori or Tokyo Station where you must change trains. On the Keisei Line you can take the Limited Express (cost \980) or the Skyliner (cost\1,880) and on the JR Line, the NEX Express (cost \3,300). The tickets for the Keisei line can be purchased at the vending machine whilst the NEX must be booked at the ticket window (NEX change for Ikebukuro at Tokyo Station). On the Keisei Line, adding an additional \160 to the value of the ticket purchases, you will be able to travel to Ikebukuro from Nippori without purchasing a further ticket. At Nippori exit the train and follow the directions to the JR line and board the train for Ikebukuro -this will be the 6th stop after Nippori. at Ikebukuro, follow the signs to the Yurakucho line and purchase a ticket from the vending machine for \180 to take you to Eidan-Akatsuka.

A word of warning. Do not board any train heading for Nerima as this branches off just before Eidan-Akatsuka. On the station you will see a fixed sign showing the word Nerima in Japanese and English.

There is also an electronic sign showing the train about to enter the station and the one to follow. If you do not understand Japanese simply compare the last Japanese character from the fixed sign with the name on the electronic sign. If they do not match, then you can board that train. Eidan-Akatsuka is the sixth stop from Ikebukuro. All stations now have the station name shown in both Japanese and English.

To enter any platform you must insert your ticket (black side down) into the slot, pass through the turnstile gate and collect your ticket that has now popped up on the other side. You need the ticket to be able to exit at your destination. Whilst your ticket has unused value, it will be returned to you no matter how many turnstiles you pass through. When fully used the ticket will be retained by the machine.

At Eidan-Akatsuka, on exiting from the train, turn left and walk up the stairs at the end of the platform. Follow the sign to Exit 1 and walk up the staris to the street level. Turn right into the main road and walk for approximately 60 meters passing a Pachinko Parlour on your right. At the first small lane turn right, walk 10 meters turn right again, walk 25 meters, turn right again and after a further 25 meters you will find yourself at the front door of Kyumeikan on your left. If the door is closed ring the bell. After removing your shoes and putting them on the shoe shelf, go upstairs and find Kubo sensei and introduce yourself. If kendo practice is going on when you arrive, please wait upstairs until it is completed.
