SCROLL PICTURE TECHNIQUES
AROUND
HEIAN PERIOD IN OLD JAPAN

--- A STRUCTURE OF THE SCROLL PICTURE ---

7th, Jul. 1996

Japanese national treasures include some scroll pictures made in Heian period of old Japan. They are "HAN DAINAGON EMAKI (the 12 century A.D.)", "GENJI MONOGATARI EMAKI", and so on. "EMAKI" means "scroll picture" in Japanese. In Heian period, the nobility had enjoyed EMAKIs like a movie, we said now. The above picture shows a structure of a EMAKI. A EMAKI expresses progress for long time, by drawing a misty picture as a discontinuos transition between scenes. It is just like a video effect transition. Then, a scene in an EMAKI may have some cuts drawn continuously. It can allow us to understand the scene at a look. So, I understand an EMAKI is the first step or an origin of a surrealism methodology. And, we can use the methodology for our expression.
