Nomination of  Soul and Soul 1969 –1999’ by Kiyoshi Suzuki,

for the Photo Book of the season 2007/2008

Soul and Soul 1969 – 1999, with works by the Japanese photographer Kiyoshi Suzuki, has been nominated in Germany for the title ‘Photo Book of the Year’. The news of this nomination came to Noorderlicht, publisher of the book and producer of the exhibition with the same name, through Fotoforum in Kassel and European Photography in Berlin.

The internationally known book dealer Markus Schaden was amongst the elected connoisseurs of photography, such as Gerry Badger, Martin Parr, Manfred Heiting and Catherine David, who were asked to nominate their favourite book of the season 2007/2008. Markus Schaden nominated Soul and Soul 1969 – 1999, saying that ‘the individual pictures and the process of the making of the book come together in an unique way’.

During the fourth edition of the Fotofrühling Kassel Photo Festival, from 30th of May through 1st of June, the nominated books will be presented in an exhibition, as well as published in a catalogue specially produced for this event.  Soul and Soul 1969-1999 will also find its place in the summer edition of the German-English magazine European Photography.

Soul and Soul 1969-1999 is the first retrospective exhibition of the influential Japanese photographer Kiyoshi Suzuki (1943-2000) in which an image of his work is created through vintage prints and book dummies. With unpolished and tender photography Suzuki shows a deep fascination for the human fragility and integrity.

Suzuki published eight books, all under his own direction. His debut, Soul and Soul (1972), belongs to the list of classic ‘first books’ such as La Banlieu de Paris by Robert Doisneau, The Destruction Business by Don McCullin and Vietnam Inc. by Phillip Jones Griffith. In 2008, in cooperation with Machiel Botman – curator of the exhibition – and the Suzuki family, Noorderlicht has published Soul and Soul 1969 – 1999, on the basis of a coincidentally retrieved book dummy left behind by Suzuki.

The exhibition Soul and Soul 1969 – 1999 by Kiyoshi Suzuki can still be seen at the Noorderlicht Gallery until the 27th of April*. (*Later prolonged through the 4th of May)
