Sander: Sander, August. 1876 geboren in Herdorf/Sieg, 1964 gestorben in Köln. (Fotografie als Kunst, 1973, by Volker Kahmen) // ... in 1910 ... began an ambitious program: the production of a vast atlas of German types from all classes of the social structure. He sought, not the individual personality, but the representative of various professions, trades, and businesses, as well as members of social and political groups. He called his project "Man in the Twentieth Century." In 1929 the first of a proposed series of twenty volumes of Sander's photographs was published under the title Antlitz der Zeit. No further volumes appeared, for the political implications displeased the Nazi regime. The publisher's inventory of books was confiscated, and the printing plates destroyed. (The History of Photography, 1982/1988 revised, Beaumont Newhall)

(from AMSTERDAM tijdens de hongerwinter,1947) / Member Photographers: F. Lemaire, Cas Oorthuys, Charles Breyer, M.C. Meyboom, Krun Taconis, Emmy Andriesse, Ad Windig, B. Kowatlo, D. de Boer Jr., Hans Sibbelee, C. Holtzapfel, Dr.C.Faber, et al.

DE VIERDE WAND de foto als theater / THE FOURTH WALL photography as theatre (Exhibition 1991, Amsterdam) directed by Leo Divendal et al. "Photography always portrays reality even when directly or indirectly manipulated by the photographer. As such, photography belongs to the borderland between reality and theatre. The photographer uses reality as a vehicle for his own views and ideas, lending it significance in the process. It is the power of the image that determines whether the photograph transcends the limits of photograph and becomes art. Forty-three photographers and writers give their visual and literary interpretation of 'the photograph as theatre'. Presented under the four sections of the Fourth Wall: The Pose, Space and Time, The Narrative, and The Illusion, introduced by four essays, they join here in an illustrious performance on the theatre of photography" (quote from the Exhibition Catalogue).
