"FROST, POE...AND JOHN"
On a recent trip to Philadelphia this summer, I had
occasion to tour
the home of the poet, Edgar Allen Poe.
At the end of the tour, the curator
asked me what prompted me
to visit this historic landmark. I answered that I
always
loved poetry and was inspired by the works of Robert Frost
and
Edgar Allen Poe to write poems in high school. But then, as
with
everyone, life happens and time does not allow for simple
pleasures.
However, I related that much later in my life the passing
of the musical poet
John Denver and the powerful messages
embedded in his compositions profoundly
influenced me to honor
him, in one regard, through my poetry and what I'm
able to do
to carry on his legacy.
At the mention of John's name, the
curator's eyes grew
bright! He shared with me that he always loved John
Denver's
music and listened to his parents play his songs while
growing
up. His favorite selection was "Rhymes and Reasons", and he
still
plays the song on his guitar today! However, after
moving out on his own
when older, he lost touch with the rest
of John's musical repertoire. This
was my opportunity to
inform him of John's life and universal message,
his
mentorship in my life, his powerful influence on my writing of
poetry
about this man, and the hundreds of songs by John the
curator has yet to
discover, learn from and enjoy!
Since the tour was ended, I left the
curator on his way to
a music store to purchase any cd's and cassettes of
John
Denver's music he could find to enrich his own life, and I
left the
Poe estate feeling so empowered to have returned a
friend of John's back to
the fold! I know Edgar Allen Poe will
understand!

"JOHN DENVER LIVES" Show in Branson, Missouri
Hillbilly Inn and
Dinner Theatre
1166 West Highway 76 / Branson, MO 65616
Review by Emily M. Parris
This month we had the pleasure of a trip to Branson, MO
where we saw
the "John Denver Lives" show done by Rod Phillips
and Rick Quincey. There
was a pouring rain when we arrived
and the rain apparently affected the
instruments as well since
there was a leak near the stage. So when Rod and
Rick
arrived they had to take time to wipe everything off and
access the
damage before they could begin their show. Both
musicians are very busy in
Branson. Rick Quincey does a
morning show at the Hillbilly Inn and Rod also
does the
pre-show at the Presley Theatre at 7:00pm. Rod is also
the music
director at the Branson Christian Church in
Downtown Branson.
What
impressed me the most about the show was the broad
range of instruments that
Rod and Rick play during the
concert. They included cello, fiddle, banjo,
keyboard,
mandolin, 2 guitars, harmonica, Irish pennywhistle,
hammered
dulcimer, Cherokee fiddle and an Indian flute. It was quite
an
amazing array of instruments for such a small stage, so
some of them were on
the floor in front of the stage. It is
an intimate venue with the meal
served right before the show.
John's song "Looking For Space" is one of
my favorites
that they sang. When they came to "Take Me Home,
Country
Roads" they encouraged the audience to sing along.
In addition to
the wonderful John Denver songs they sang, I
enjoyed the song "Love Was In
Their Lives" which is about
Rod's parents. During the performance they also
had tv
screens with scenes of John Denver and nature for a backdrop
to the
music. If you come to Branson, Missouri you must see
"John Denver Lives"
where Rod and Rick are keeping the spirit
of John Denver alive. There is
also a cd available of the
show as performed at an earlier venue at the
Engler Block in
Branson.

"Western Pennsylvania Mountain High"
John Denver Tribute -
Raystown Lake
August 13th's Spirit Windstar Connection's "Second Annual
Rocky
Mountain High in the Alleghenies, A Tribute to John
Denver" concert was
wonderful! Thanks to the Army Corps of
Engineers it was again located at the
beautiful Seven Points
Amphitheater at Raystown Lake in Hesston, Pa.
We
had an exhibition room with videos playing all
afternoon, WolfPup was there
with her WildLife Creations and
beautiful displays, and there was lots of
information
available about Windstar and John Denver. Plus, the Peace
Cloth was also "on tour" at the event. Spirit member Jrspike
is quite an
artist and did up a beautiful new purple and blue
mountain scene panel for
our Connection. She "planted" Aspen
leaves on the grassy field, too, so
each Spirit member could
sign it. What an outstanding job!
Despite no
fire raining in the sky (at least not that we
could see because of the
clouds) and except for the horrible
heat and sun, we had a terrific day
because there was no rain.
The concert was just outstanding. How could it be
anything
else with guys as talented as Tim Dabbs, Mark Cormican, and
Chris
Westfall.

Steve
Kern:
"Kern has the same lanky blond hair, the same moon-shaped
face,
the same ear-to-ear grin as one of Colorado's most
famous icons. Put him in
denim and give him a pair of those
big round specs, and Steve Kern is the
second coming of John
Denver." That's what the Santa Cruz Sentinel had to
say about
Steve Kern, a John Denver Tribute artist who has appeared at
a
number of John Denver Tribute events around the country.
Steve is also
called "Little John." When he appeared in Las
Vegas with Peter Saltzer as

Shreveport (AP) - 8-21-05
"He has
played with rockers Elvis Presley, Dale Hawkins and
Rick Nelson, with John
Denver and with Elvis Costello. He was
one of the first two sidemen inducted
into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. Now a bronze statue of a younger James
Burton -
he turned 66 on Sunday, as his new James Burton
International
Guitar Festival wound up in his home town - stands with
a
statue of Elvis outside the Municipal Memorial Auditorium,
where both
performed.
"Yeah, it looks like me," he said, smiling, "The
attitude,
the smile, the clothes and the guitar." The bronze guitar
bears
a paisley print, and Burton is keeping time with the
back of his left heel.
Eric Kaposta, who also made the Elvis
statue, said he used old photographs
for the likeness, which
shows Burton between his late 20s and early 30s.

DTrube < dtrube@comcast.net > During a recent
trip to Hershey
Park (in Hershey, PA), I found that the celebrity
handprints
in cement, including John Denver's, have been removed.
I
emailed the park about it and this is their response:
"Thank you for
your note regarding the cement hand
prints formerly located at
Hersheypark's Carousel
Circle. That area was re-done. The area was
renamed
Founders Circle in honor of Mr. Hershey.
Unfortunately
the hand prints were taken out to
make way for the new fountain and
statue of Mr.
Hershey. The hand prints have been put in storage
and will eventually find a new home at HersheyPark."

"I can see the snowcapped mountains"
by Irene Kavanagh
I can see the snow capped mountains,
So clear in my mind's eye,
As
they forge up to the heavens,
And caress the pure blue sky.
I can hear the rippling waters,
Of mountain lakes and streams,
As
they journey ever onwards,
Ever present in my dreams.
I can almost touch the Aspen leaves,
Flickering golden in the sun,
It
brings to mind the wonder,
What just one man has done.
I can smell the smoke of campfire,
I can hear the sound,
Of laughter
and of music,
From the friends who've gathered 'round.
I can feel the autumn sunshine,
That embraces from above,
Filling up
my senses,
With tenderness and love.
If you need your spirit lifted,
And your heart it yearns for
love,
Take your thoughts to Colorado
Where an eagle soars above.
To the music and the mountains,
The friends that greet you there,
To
remember Mother Nature's son,
Think of him and say a prayer.
To thank him for his music,
For his life, his love of peace,
He has
left a lifelong legacy,
Which for me will never cease.
Endurance
by Cynthia Helen Gullage
Whenever I hear a Denver tune,
I see his smiling face.
This man, who
had a dream of peace,
For all the human race.
Sometimes I feel a little
sad,
And sometimes I feel high.
His music takes me to a place
Where
golden eagles fly.
With images of nature
He painted golden scenes,
Of brotherhood and
loving,
And living out your dreams,
Of country roads, and memories,
And
sailing o'er the seas,
Of children and the flowers,
And of the falling
leaves.
Whenever I hear a Denver tune,
I start to sing along,
Though the
singer now is silent,
We'll always have his songs.
The music of today may
fade,
As does the ebbing tide,
But the melodies he gave to us
Will,
evermore, abide
