PRESS RELEASE

"Almost Heaven" returns to celebrate Denver Center Theater
Company's Silver Season

DENVER - The Tony Award-winning Denver Center Theatre
Company's Artistic Director Donovan Marley has announced a new
production of the hit musical "Almost Heaven: Songs & Stories
of John Denver" - bringing John Denver home again to open the
company's Silver Season.

Denver Center Theatre Company in association with Harold Thau
presents "Almost Heaven: Songs and Stories of John Denver."
Songs by John Denver and others. Written and adapted by Peter
Glazer. Orchestrations, vocal arrangements and musical
direction by Jeff Waxman. Original concept by Harold Thau.
Musical consultation by Milt Okun. Directed by Randal Myler.
Extended run begins October 2, 2003 The Ricketson Theatre /
Denver Performing Arts Complex.

"Annie's Song," "Sunshine On My Shoulders" and "Rocky Mountain
High" were only three of the songs that swept away Denver
audiences during the 2000-01 season. Almost Heaven proved
Denver audiences loved their "Country Roads" boy. And now,
DCTC director and artistic associate Randal Myler brings John
Denver back in a brand new production with added songs and a
new cast. Only 28,000 cheering fans saw our world premiere
production; thousands more were turned away. Did you get your
ticket to Heaven? Single tickets available beginning August
24, 2003. 303-893-4100 or 800-641-1222 TTY 303-893-9582

ALMOST DENVER reviewed by J.P. McDaniel.
Reprinted from "The Columbine Courier".

ALMOST DENVER gets audience high on laughs.

It's called "Almost Denver: The Songs and Failures of Jim
Aurora", but whether the play is about living in a Colorado
suburb, a jab at bio-documentaries, or a farce about the
musical artist John Denver remains open to individual
interpretation. However it is perceived, it is well delivered
by the cast at Rattlebrain Theatre Co., which is making a
splash on the theatre scene with their tongue-in-cheek
versions of popular area productions.
"Almost Denver" tells the story of Jim Aurora, a folksy,
toothy guitar picker with a blond mop hairstyle and big round
glasses. The character and story line has too many
similarities to last year's "Almost Heaven: The Song and
Stories of John Denver" tribute at the Denver Center Theater,
scheduled for a return this October, to not be a jab at the
popular artist and production.
The Rattlebrain cast immediately grabs the audience by
opening with their loud and lively version of "Take Me Home,
Parker Road," set to the music of John Denver's popular
Country Roads tune. Right away, the audience knows to hold on
tight, as this is going to be a lively ride through satire,
puns, humor and even legitimate concerns about a life
patterned after one of Colorado's favorite sons and most
populated suburbs.
Through songs and dialogue the five member cast tells the
life story of Jim Blixendorfer, who changes his name to Jim
Aurora and launches an endearing but lackadaisical musical
career. Although the tunes are familiar, the words are totally
the creation of the Rattlebrain writers and reflect lyrics
that would have made the real John Denver gag. Such songs as
"Thank God I'm Unemployed", "Heaving on a Jet Plane", and
"Let's All Get High", plus about a dozen more, utilize the
familiar tunes that carved a career for Denver.
Throughout the production the cast is very careful not to
give direct reference to John Denver, stating in an interview
afterwards that they have high regard for the artist and have
long been fans of his music. While definitely a spoof,
admiration for the artist is ultimately reflected in the
production.
The production was written and performed by Jane and Dave
Shirley, Tim, Michael and Kris O'Shea, Derek Hartman and Kirk
Anderson. The group poured over Denver's biography and songs,
cleverly selecting aspects that could be adopted into the
spoof. Says Michael O'Shea, "From the beginning we said this
was not going to bash John Denver. We wanted to do this show
as a cheesy, smiling spoof that makes fun of the productions
of Denver Civic Theatre and some of these biography shows
coming about"
Uncannily, many areas of the parody parallel Denver's
real life, such as his involvement with the self improvement
group est, portrayed in "Almost Denver" as Estes Park. While
some aspects mirror real life more than the writers realized,
some couldn't have been further from reality, such as the
portrayal of his mother as a chain-smoking trailer tramp
making a living selling porn and homemade jam. Although the
greatest appreciation and absorption of the spoof will be to
John Denver fans and to metro area locals, especially Aurora
residents, the humor will not be lost on others.
John Denver withstood many jabs to his music, his causes
and his personal life. This latest one by Rattlebrain Theatre
Company just goes to show that he weathered them all and that
the music and life of John Denver is still recognized and
appreciated on many levels, even the basement humor of comedy
satire.
Almost Denver is proving to be so popular that the run
has been extended through the end of August. Shows are 8:00pm
Fridays and Saturdays with tickets at $25. For tickets,
contact the Rattlebrain Theatre Company, 1601 Arapahoe Street,
Denver, Colorado. 720-932-7384

The play debuted on June 6, 2003.

'Jim Aurora' Comes Alive in a Toe-Tapping Parody
by Mark Wolf
Rocky Mountain News
June 13, 2003

The curious and largely unknown saga of Jim Aurora is a
forgotten footnote in American pop history. Possibly because
he didn't exist. He wasn't one of Spinal Tap's drummers, but
you're getting the idea. In "Almost Denver: The Songs and
Failure of Jim Aurora", Rattlebrain Theater brings the
never-was singer-songwriter to life.
Any resemblance to the late John Denver is strictly
intentional. It's Denver's melodies with Rattlebrain-reworked
lyrics that are the show's glue.
Musical parody is tricky stuff. The material has to be
not only funny but also faux-authentic; that is, close enough
to the original in style and presentation that the reference
point is sharp. Each time a picker puts thumb to guitar
string, Jim Aurora comes alive. The musical numbers are almost
uniformly clever and well performed. If you've seen any of
Rattlebrain's three previous productions you've glimpsed an
occasional musical moment, but nothing to prepare for the
level of performances by the five-person cast. Michael
O'Shea, Tim O'Shea, Kris O'Shea, Dave Shirley and Jane
Shirley trade off singing lead with an instrumentation of two
guitars, a keyboard, drums and assorted percussion/novelty
things.
If you're going to pull this off, the cast has to be able
to really sing and play. And they really can. It turns out
that what Rattlebrain has been good at - straight comedy
sketches - is the least effective aspect of the show. The
story is wafer-thin and the sketches that form the connective
tissue between the songs range from fairly amusing to
watch-checking tedious, especially as the show winds down.
Given the staging (four performers on chairs, the other behind
a drum kit, everybody wearing headset microphones) it's a
little like watching a radio show. You'd be tempted to switch
stations when people aren't singing.
But when they are, the show rouses.
Country Roads becomes Parker Road and the Aurora jokes
commence; not exactly cutting-edge but also not overdone ("Hey
it's good to see tract homes again" to the tune of "Back Home
Again").
The gently demented folk song Porn and Jam is a
highlight, "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" is cleverly turned to an
homage to airsickness and "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" is
deconstructed as a tribute to unemployment. And on it goes
through knockoffs of "Calypso", "Follow Me" and others.
You may walk out humming the laugh-out-loud takeoff on
"Rocky Mountain High." And you'll wish they'd done more
singing and less talking.

I work in our small town library and as the Millennium project
the community installed a monstrosity of a clock that chimes

"The Future's Safe"

Just thought you would like to know that the next generation
of John Denver fans are up and running. I have been a club and
pub singer in Scotland for the last 30 years and sing several
John Denver numbers. My 6 year old son heard me singing
"Country Roads" and wanted to know more about who wrote the
song. He is now a big fan and won his school talent
competition at the age of six singing "Country Roads."
Keep up the good work...

With The Angels

by Cynthia Gullage

Our John is with the angels now.
Of this, I have no doubt.
And I just bet they're laughing
Each time he says, "Far Out"

He's singing with a heavenly choir,
His old guitar in hand,
While "Country Roads" reflects
The dialects of diverse lands

He's walking with his father,
And his Uncle Dean again.
Where every man's his brother,
And everyone's his friend.

I know he's telling stories
Of "the one that got away" -
Of soaring, like an eagle
On golden summer days.

I cannot help but envy him
The peace he's found up there.
But mostly, I just wish that he
Was on Earth with us here.
